Carbs Fine-Tune Team Sports Skills

June 22, 2012

Even though carbohydrates are your body's preferred source of energy, it's not unusual to find dieters who are drastically cutting back on carb consumption, sometimes going so far as to eliminate them from the diet altogether. A study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport underscores the importance of carbohydrates to active adults.

Researchers analyzed the actions of 15 soccer players who engaged in a simulated match. Half were given a carbohydrate solution while the rest drank a beverage containing only electrolytes. Carbs prevented a decline in shooting speed and accuracy that was experienced by the placebo drinkers. Carbs also helped preserve blood glucose levels throughout the entire match. That's how carbs can keep you from running out of gas when you push training to the limit.
