Exercise Decreases Your Calorie Intake

February 22, 2012

A cutting phase that incorporates regular cardio sessions doubles down on weight loss support, according to a study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. Researchers found that, in addition to burning calories on the treadmill or stationary bike, the effort effectively suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin.

Ten physically active men completed 2 trials of running on a treadmill at 70% of their capacity for 45 minutes. In one bout, they were adequately hydrated. In another, they were allowed to become slightly dehydrated (approximately 1% to 2% of total body weight lost through fluids).

Compared to adequately hydrated subjects who didn't exercise, both groups of treadmill runners consumed far fewer calories at an all you can eat breakfast buffet later on. 4,839 calories compared to 1,749 for the hydrated runners and 1,656 for the slightly dehydrated runners. Ghrelin levels were significantly lower in both exercising groups. So hit the gym often, watch your food choices and use performance beverages to support hydration while training.
