Everybody needs a break from weight room domination, and the holiday season is a great time to let that stack of plates collect dust. But how long can you sit on the couch watching bowl games before your gains are negatively impacted? A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology suggests two weeks is enough to dent your progress.
Study subjects who made a point of taking at least 10,000 steps a day gained 7% belly fat and shaved 7% off their peak aerobic fitness after decreasing activity levels to 1,500 steps for two weeks. Walking to work and back isn't exactly hard core training, and these subjects might not have been clean eaters either. But the rapid weight gain and fitness loss should serve as training motivation after a week or so away from your workout routine.
